Understanding Better!

Know I think I am understanding my topic better. I'm starting to learn how music influenced African Slaves and how it encouraged them. I am getting a little confused because there is so much information on my topic that I don't know what to do with it. I mean I know what I am trying to do but I don't know. :(

Did You Know!

  1. Did you know that gospel means "good news"
  2. Did you know when slaves came from Africa to America they brought religious beliefs and music styles with them
  3. Did you know that many slaves had to convert over to Christianity
  4. Did you know that slaves beliefs and christian beliefs were put together in song called Negro Spirituals
  5. Did you know slaves created a way to express their feelings and religious beliefs in a way that was all their own
  6. Did you know spirituals spoke of their love of God, hope of heaven, desire for freedom, disdain for slavery, and secret plans for escaping
  7. Did you know that when slaves left the south to the north their migration and new habitat started gospel music.
  8. Did you know Africans attended their master's worship services
  9. Did you know that in those worship services slaves were monitored and they were served as a reinforcement of the slavery indoctrination
  10. Did you know the worship music (hymns) of the white masters became the backdrop for the music the enslaved Africans would use at their eventual worship meetings.
  11. Did you know that slaves had campground meetings (they had church)
  12. Did you know in the tradition of the black church, call and response in singing and in speaking has been and continues to be a foundation on which the gospel is delivered.
  13. Did you know that no longer bound to the walls of the American church, gospel music captures the creative and spiritual imaginations of increasing numbers of international audiences.

I know what to do!

At first I thought that the information in my graduation project would be hard to find. I also thought that I only could get information from the internet. I decided to go out and get books on the music of slavery and how it changed into different types of African American music. I think I'm finding way more information on African American music.

Decided to change my topic!

I decide that I want to do the history of African American classical music that leads up to the music that we listen to today. Then compose my own song on the piano and sing it.

Grad. Project Ideas

My cousin Steven already graduated and he finished his graduation project but I don't know what he did. Before the first class of Grad. Profect I asked my friends what kind of stuff happens in the class. They told me that I need to pick a topic for the project. My mother and I have been talking about what I would want to do and I decided that I wanted to create my own song on the piano. Creating my own song on the piano would be a great thing to do because I never did that. Some of my concerns for this graduation project is that making a song on the piano is going to be hard, I dont know how to make a new song.
